Youth Involvement

How can I get involved if I'm under 18 years old?

Are you looking for a way to earn community service hours, while helping animals here at the Humane Society?

We have a great way that you can help, while earning those needed hours!

Newspaper Collection Program

We use newspapers to line many of our kennels for animal intake. Collect old newspapers, remove the glossy ads and half sheets, and lie the large double sheets flat in a pile. We’ll give you one hour of community service for each inch of newspaper you bring us, up to 20 hours.

The student must be present when bringing papers to the Humane Society.

Days for drop off are Sunday, Monday & Tuesdays between the hours of 9am – 12pm & 2pm – 5pm

Please note – the papers must be flat, not bundled, with all single sheets and ads removed as shown by the examples below.

Do Your Co-op Program at the Humane Society

Each semester the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society takes several high school students from across Windsor/Essex County to complete their co-op credits. We value and appreciate the work these students do and in return, try to provide them with valuable work experience related to animals and animal care.

Job Information

If chosen as a co-op student you will be rotated through various areas of the shelter, learning the tasks and responsibilities associated with each area. The different positions are Pound Kennel Worker, Adoption Kennel Worker, Adoption Counselor and Behaviour Personnel.

Some of the tasks and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

How to Apply

Fill out the Co-op Application, attach your resume, attendance record and a short essay on why you would like to co-op with the Humane Society.

Completed applications should be submitted to the Shelter Manager by email no later than one week prior to expected start date.

Please note, there are limited space available. Students will be selected based on their application, an interview and their availability. We accept applications up to one month prior to the semester or year start for the student.

Run Your Own Fundraiser

One great way to get involved in helping the animals at the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society is to hold a fundraiser. When you raise funds and donate them to the Humane Society, you are taking part in making sure all the animals have food, clean water, warm blankets, and lots of toys.

We have a special youth fundraising guide to help you get started. If you have any questions, please email event@windsorhumane.org or call 519-966-5751 ext. 123
