Thank you for your interest in volunteering with WECHS. Here you will find our active volunteer programs, information and updates. Please note in-shelter volunteers must be 18 years of age – if you are under 18yrs old, please visit our Youth Involvement section of our website.
Cat Enrichment
The cats in our care require attention and TLC while they wait for their forever home. Our volunteers help them to adjust to shelter living by providing necessary enrichment such as playing, brushing, and conversation.

Dog Enrichment
The dog world has many breeds and sizes, each with their own temperament. Dog Enrichment volunteers participate in their care through human interaction, supportive training, and physical activity while they wait to be adopted.

Foster Volunteers
Foster volunteers care for WECHS animals in their own homes until they are ready for adoption. They have a vital role, working closely with our Foster Coordinator to provide the animals in our care the chance they need for a positive outcome.

Youth Animal Welfare Program
Looking to gain hands-on experience with animals while making a difference in your community? Our Youth Animal Welfare Program is a 12-week experience designed for youth ages 12–17 who are passionate about animal welfare.
Participants will learn about shelter operations, animal behaviour, enrichment, responsible pet ownership, and safe animal handling through a combination of classroom learning and supervised, hands-on activities. Along the way, you’ll develop confidence, leadership, teamwork, and practical skills while helping improve the lives of animals waiting for their forever homes.
Whether you’re considering a future career working with animals or simply want to give back to your community, this program is a great place to start.

Event Volunteers
Throughout the year, the various events we host benefit from a helping hand – if you’re interested in volunteering as the need arises, this is a great option for you. Once you are approved as an event volunteer, you’ll receive emails when there is an opportunity to volunteer – if you wish to participate, respond; otherwise, let the request go until the next one comes along.

Transport Volunteer
Help animals get to where they need to go! As a Transport Volunteer, you’ll assist in safely driving dogs, cats, or reptiles—often out of the Windsor/Essex area—to other shelters, rescues, or specialty veterinary appointments. Your support plays a vital role in giving these animals access to the care and second chances they deserve.
If you’re interested, please email us with your name, phone number, and address, and we’ll add you to our transport volunteer email list. When an animal needs transport, an email will go out to all volunteers, with the details of the request. If you’re available to help, just respond to that email.

PLEASE NOTE: If the responsibilities of a volunteer position involves authority over or the trust of persons who are vulnerable members of society (such as children, seniors, or persons with special needs), a vulnerable sector screening police records check will be required before the commencement of the volunteer work.
