Our volunteers are an essential part of the day to day operations here at the shelter, and we are so thankful for their dedication and love for the animals. In our volunteer spotlights, we introduce you to some of our fantastic volunteers and learn about what motivates them to help!

How do you spend your time when you’re not volunteering?
When not volunteering, I enjoy golfing, travelling and teach piano lessons twice a week to some very wonderful budding musicians. I also volunteer with several non profit organizations in both Windsor and Amherstburg.
What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering?
Volunteering is a wonderful way to ‘give back’ and ‘pay it forward’. Specifically volunteering at the WECHS provides the reminder that we need to take care of our local ‘community of furry friends’. It is very rewarding to make a difference for those animals in ‘care’.
What’s your favorite task at the shelter?
My favourite task is by far talking and socializing with each cat. They all have different personalities, but a similar need to be engaged, cared for, and loved. I especially love working with the senior cats and always love hearing that someone has provided them with a ‘forever home’.
What’s one challenge you’ve faced here, and how did you handle it?
The biggest challenge I’ve faced is knowing that some surrendered cats in my care are missing their ‘human’. So it is with a continued effort that I work to make them feel comfortable and relieve the stress and anxiety they feel.
What does being part of this shelter community mean to you?
I have been volunteering at WECHS since I retired in 2012 and feel so grateful to be part of a team that holds the same values, experiences and expectations as I do.
A big thank you to the dedicated staff at WECHS who continue to make my weekly visits so worthwhile.
