adoption process

So, you’re ready to adopt a pet? We thank you for considering adoption, and look forward to helping you find your new best friend. Please feel free to browse our adoptable animals online before you come in (dogscatssmall animals). Please note that we are not able to put animals on hold for you. If you’re interested in a particular animal that you see on our website (especially popular breeds), you should submit an application immediately.

All available animals are listed on our website and applications are accepted online 24 hours a day. Our adoption centre is open for walk-ins on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 1:30pm to 6pm; every other day visits to meet animals are by appointment after you have submitted an application. Walk-in times are limited for the welfare of our animals. We’ve learned that they find a lot of foot traffic stressful, so by limiting walk-ins times we’re keeping them more comfortable and calm. Thank you for understanding!

To apply to adopt an available animal, please click on their photo and fill out an Adoption Survey online or visit in person during walk-in hours. If you have already completed an online survey you will be able to add a new animal to your application.

Applications will be reviewed on a first come, first served basis. You will receive an email when your application is being reviewed.

In person visitors will only be able to apply for animals who don’t already have an application submitted online (occasionally our software will allow for multiple online applications for the same animal so an application doesn’t guarantee that you will be able to take that pet home).

After you have filled out an application, our helpful adoption counsellors will talk to you about the pet(s) you’re considering, and give you some background information about them. All of our adoptable animals have been assessed medically and behaviourally, and we will give you information about anything important that was learned during those assessments. We will also provide you with what we know about the animal’s history, and anything else we’ve learned about them. We will also ask you some questions about the information you provided on your survey. If you don’t hear from us after applying feel free to follow up, but also check your spam folder in case our emails have been sent there.

When you come to pick up your new friend, our adoption counsellors will ask you for identification (please remember to bring ID with your address when you come to adopt). For most animals, your pick-up appointment will be the following day. Typically we cannot delay your pick up more than a day or two after you have been approved. Our animals are waiting to go home, and there are often other potential adoptions ready to take them home right away. Please only apply for an animal when you are ready to take them home within 24 hours.

When you come for your appointment you will have already reviewed and signed your adoption contract, received your pet’s medical record, and paid your adoption fee all online. But if you have any questions during this process please don’t hesitate to ask an adoption counsellor – they are here to help you!

Occasionally, when you first take an animal home they will go home as a foster, even though you are eventually planning to adopt. Please read your paperwork carefully, as there is a big difference between fostering an animal and adopting them. Again, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to let us know.
