Microchip Your Pet

All dogs, cats, and rabbits adopted from the Humane Society are microchipped prior to adoption. We also offer regular microchip clinics where you can have your pet microchipped for only $20. Microchips are also available at the time of surgery at the WECHS Veterinary Clinic.

A microchip is a permanent, non-removable pet identification that will not fade or be lost over time, as can occur with tattoos or tags. The microchip is a small chip (about the size of a grain of rice) that will bring up a specific number when scanned by the proper type of scanner. Microchips use radio frequency identification technology to communicate with microchip scanners. Humane societies, vet clinics, and municipal pounds have scanners capable of reading microchips. When the chip is scanned, the number is matched in a database to determine the owner’s contact information so the pet can be easily returned. People often think that their lost pet can be tracked through their microchip, but sadly, that technology isn’t yet available. The pet must be scanned to find the information on the chip.

It’s very important that you keep the information registered to your pet’s microchip current if you move or change phone numbers. If your pet was microchipped at the Humane Society you can update the information on the chip here: If your pet was microchipped elsewhere, please call your clinic for details of how to update the chip.
