Happy Volunteer Appreciation Month!
April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and at the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society, we’re taking this time to recognize the incredible people who make our work possible.
Every day, our volunteers show up with compassion, dedication, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to help animals in need. Whether they’re walking dogs, enriching the lives of cats, preparing treats, or lending a hand at events, their impact is truly immeasurable.
🐾 Impact by the Numbers
In 2025 alone, our volunteers contributed an incredible 9,867 hours of service. That’s thousands of moments spent walking dogs, comforting shy cats, preparing enrichment activities, supporting events, and helping animals feel safe while they wait for their forever homes.
Some highlights from the year include:
- Over 5,400 hours in our Dog Enrichment Program
- More than 4,000 hours spent caring for and socializing cats
- Dedicated support through programs like Kong filling, car rides, and event assistance
Each of these hours represents something bigger: a nervous dog gaining confidence, a withdrawn cat learning to trust, or an animal simply having a better day spending more time with a caring person.
The Many Ways Volunteers Help
Our volunteers wear many hats, and every role plays a vital part in keeping the shelter operating smoothly.
- Enrichment & Socialization – Giving animals the mental and physical stimulation they need to thrive.
- Animal Comfort & Care in Foster Homes – Spending time in their home with animals who need extra time to heal or get a break from life in the shelter.
- Behind-the-Scenes Support – Preparing Kongs, assisting with transport, and helping our team run smoothly.
- Events & Community Outreach – Representing our mission and helping us connect with the community.
No matter the role, every volunteer contributes to a shared goal: improving the lives of animals in our care.
More Than Volunteers—A Community
What makes our volunteer program so special isn’t just the hours—it’s the heart behind them.
Our volunteers show up in all seasons, through busy schedules and unpredictable days, because they believe in giving animals a second chance. They celebrate the wins, support the shy ones, and help us keep moving forward, even on the hardest days.
Thank You 💙
To every volunteer who has walked through our doors, donated their time, or supported our mission in any way—thank you. Your compassion creates real change, and we are endlessly grateful.
