Gambit's Road to Recovery
At just three months old, Gambit should be worrying about toys, treats, and finding the perfect lap to curl up in. Instead, when he arrived at our shelter, he was fighting through excruciating pain.
His little body was covered in scabs and open sores stretching from his mouth to his paws. His face was swollen, his skin inflamed, and it was clear he was incredibly uncomfortable. Our medical team quickly determined that Gambit was suffering from puppy strangles — a rare autoimmune disease most often seen in puppies between 3 weeks and 4 months of age.
Puppy strangles (also known as juvenile cellulitis) occurs when a puppy’s immune system essentially goes into overdrive and begins attacking its own healthy tissue. It causes sudden, severe facial swelling, painful pustules and lesions around the face and ears, swollen lymph nodes, and often secondary ear infections. It can look frightening, progress rapidly, and without prompt veterinary treatment, can lead to scarring or serious complications.
The good news? With early intervention, intensive medical care, and close monitoring, many puppies can recover — and that’s exactly what we’re fighting for with Gambit.
He immediately began treatment under the watchful eye of our veterinary team and is now continuing his recovery in a loving foster home where he can rest comfortably and heal in a calm environment. Recovery from puppy strangles takes time. It requires medication, patience, and careful observation to ensure his immune system settles and his skin can properly repair.
And here’s the beautiful part of this story: despite everything his tiny body has been through, Gambit’s spirit hasn’t dimmed.
His foster mom tells us he’s your typical playful puppy — curious, wiggly, and full of affection. He loves to play, he loves attention, and yes… he is absolutely a lap dog. After treatments and rest, he happily curls up for cuddles, soaking in the love like he’s been waiting for it his whole life.
Gambit still has some healing ahead of him, and it will be some time before he’s available for adoption. Right now, his job is simply to grow stronger each day.
We’re so proud of this brave little boy and grateful to our medical team and foster family for giving him the care he needs. Please keep Gambit in your thoughts as he continues on his journey to recovery — we can’t wait for the day he’s healthy, happy, and ready to find his forever home. 💕🐾
