Dogs

The Town of Amherstburg offers animal control 24 hours a day for dogs. Stray dogs can be dropped off at the Humane Society, or can be picked up by an animal control officer. Dogs are held at the Humane Society for their stray hold, and then assessed for adoption if not claimed.

 

In 2023, the Humane Society took in 28 stray dogs from the Town of Amherstburg, 22 picked up by our staff.

Cats

The Town of Amherstburg offers residents who find a stray cat in the municipality the option of bringing them to the Humane Society at no charge. The Town also offers spay/neuter vouchers to help residents spay or neuter community cats.

 

As part of our animal control services, the Humane Society picks up sick or injured cats from the Town of Amherstburg, 24 hours a day in life-threatening situations.

 

In 2023, the Humane Society took in 98 stray cats from the Town of Amherstburg, 11 picked up by our staff.

Domestic Rabbits

The Town of Amherstburg offers residents who find a stray rabbit in the municipality the option of bringing them to the Humane Society at no charge. Because there is no bylaw against a rabbit roaming at large, healthy stray rabbits who do not appear to be lost or abandoned are not picked up.

 

As part of our animal control services, the Humane Society picks up sick or injured rabbits from the Town of Amherstburg, 24 hours a day in life-threatening situations.

Wildlife

As part of our animal control services, the Humane Society picks up sick, injured, or orphaned wildlife from the Town of Amherstburg, 24 hours a day in life-threatening situations.

 

Healthy wildlife are not removed by the Town of Amherstburg. Residents may contract with a private animal removal company to remove unwanted wildlife from their property.

 

In 2023, the Humane Society took in 15 sick, injured, or orphaned wild animals from the Town of Amherstburg, 13 picked up by our staff.

Protective Care

As part of our animal control services, the Humane Society provides short-term emergency intakes in situations where police, fire, or paramedics are involved and no family or friend is on scene.

In 2023, the Humane Society took in 6 Town of Amherstburg animals at the request of social service agencies.
