how to build

winter cat shelters

Winter cat shelters are an amazing tool that can be used to keep your outdoor kitty friends safe and warm over the cold winter months. There are many different ways to make effective winter shelters, and tutorials for all crafting skill levels can be found with a quick Google search, but we at WECHS wanted to give you the instructions for how we build them! Below you will find a list of supplies and step by step instructions on how to make winter cat shelters similar to the ones.

You will need:

  • A large plastic tote

  • 3.4 inch durofoam sheet OR a Styrofoam cooler

  • A round plastic tube or container big enough for a cat to fit through.

  • Duct Tape

  • Straw (NOT HAY!)

  • Misc Supplies: knife to cut plastic & a marker

Step One: Open your plastic tote and insert your Sytrofoam cooler, or cut the durofoam make a cube to fit inside the tote. If using durofoam, make sure to tape the edges of your cube together, leaving the top part loose to come on and off as needed.

Step Two: Use whatever tubing you have to draw a circle on the tote. Cut the plastic tote where the circle is, and do the same for your foam inside.

Step Three: Insert your tubing tunnel into the holes you cut into the tote and foam, leaving at least a few inches sticking out of the box. Tape all around the inside edge where the tube meet the foam, and outside where the tube hits the tote.

Step Four: Fill the inside of the foam box with straw, about 3/4 full. Add the foam lid, and tote lid, and you’re done!
