End of Life Care

Owner Requested Euthanasia

It’s not easy to know sometimes when is the right time to say goodbye to a beloved pet. Especially when age or illness comes on gradually, it can be difficult to assess your pet’s quality of life. This tool can help you assess when your pet is ready to cross the Rainbow Bridge: http://lapoflove.com/Pet_Quality_of_Life_Scale_DrMcVety.pdf

When you decide that it’s time to say goodbye, we recommend that you make an appointment with a private veterinarian so that you may be present at the time of euthanasia. Your pet may also benefit from being in a more familiar environment, and some veterinarians will even come and perform the procedure in your home.

However, because we realize the cost is an obstacle for some pet owners, the Humane Society offers caring, compassionate euthanasia services when the cost of a regular veterinarian is a barrier to putting a suffering animal to rest. We regret that you will not be able to accompany your pet when the service is performed here. When you surrender an animal for euthanasia we have to independently confirm that euthanasia is the only option before we proceed; this means that if our team determines that the condition is treatable or that the animal still has a good quality of life, we may decide not to euthanize and your pet could go up for adoption.

Because this service is only provided in cases of financial need, there is no set fee. Please contact us at 519-966-5751 ext 110 to discuss payment terms that meet your particular needs and book a time to bring your pet in.

Special Cremation

The Windsor Essex County Humane Society is able to offer the return of your pet’s ashes as a memorial keepsake after they have passed away. This is a wonderful gesture to recognize and remember the loyalty and love felt for a special family friend who will never be forgotten.

The cost for this service will depend on the pet’s weight, and the type of urn selected. Prices range from $300 to $485 for a simple urn or a wooden box when done through the Humane Society. However, we encourage pet owners to work with Windsor Precious Pet Cremation directly to make arrangements if possible. For more information about their services please visit www.windsorpreciouspetcremation.com or call them at 519-966-1211. Please note that while the Humane Society is not normally able to pick up remains from your home however this is a service that is offered by Precious Pet for a fee.
