Remember Reno? When Reno arrived at the Humane Society he weighed only 16 pounds, dramatically under the weight he should have been. Within days he gained 35% of his body weight demonstrating, along with extensive medical testing, that his condition was due to neglect and lack of food. A Belle River man was charged under the Ontario SPCA Act with one count of permitting distress to an animal and one count of failing to comply with prescribed standards of care for an animal for Reno’s neglect. Those charges are still before the courts.

Well, Reno has moved past his sad start in life, and is ready to begin his great future with his new dad Derek and his new canine brother Jackson (Jackson was also adopted from the Humane Society)! Check out those happy faces!

Kitten season is coming, and we’re getting ready for the baby kittens who will be coming through our doors. Can you help us out with some of the items needed to care for them – kitten formula, bottle kits, canned kitten food, or heating pads? These items can be obtained from many pet stores or department stores, or shop online from our Amazon wish list: http://www.amazon.ca/registry/wishlist/2TU4DNN1O45F8

As an added incentive, if you purchase items from our “kitten registry” and bring them in by the end of March you’ll receive a discount off the adoption fee of any cat over 1 year of age! Buy one of each of the listed items and your adoption is FREE (admin fee of $30 still applies). Check out our adorable cats looking for a home at: http://windsorhumane.org/…/adoptabl…/adoptable-animals-cats/

Thanks so much to Catholic Central High School for their awesome dog treats that they kindly donated to us. The Special education class got to meet with our Humane Education teacher to learn about being responsible animal guardians. The animals appreciate your generosity.

For the last few weeks, the Starbucks in Lakeshore has pulled it’s community together and helped raise $278.47! Along with the generous gift of money, they gave twelve bags of kitty food. Thank you Starbucks for your generosity and support. It is people like you who make our organization possible. THANK YOU 🙂

This birthday girl just turned eleven and has decided to make a donation instead of receiving birthday gifts. Thank you Rachel for your kind act, we appreciate you!

It’s been just over 2 months since four malnourished dogs were rescued near a park in Tilbury. Grace, Tilly, Teller (now Sampson) and Sawyer (now Zoey) have all now found amazing homes where they are loved and cherished, and will never be abandoned again. They stopped by today to say thank you to some of the people who helped with their rescue, and with others who came together to raise money for their care.  Karen Faubert-Newman and Robert Clark organized an online auction, and over 150 businesses and individuals donated items to the cause and raised more than $5,000! All of the funds were donated to the Windsor/Essex Humane Society not only to cover the medical bills of the Tilbury dogs but also to help other dogs in need.  In addition to her mom’s generosity, Karen Newman’s daughter, Jessica Newman celebrated her 10th birthday January 31 and helped organize a small donation drive at her school and then she hosted a birthday party to which she asked all of her guests to bring treats or toys for WECHS in honour of the four dogs.

We’ve been touched this week by all the caring people who have come in with contributions to help our community’s animals!  On Tuesday the 46th Girl Guides of Lasalle who had collected donations during the month of February stopped by to drop them off.  And then on Thursday, Ava came in with $130.50 that she raised from her 11th bday party.  Friday was Jenn, who raised an amazing $757.50 through a Cupcake Day sale at her workplace (we saw the photos and those were some very cute cupcakes!).  Our special thanks to all of these generous folks, as well as all of those who help us help our community’s animals.  Thank you!
