John Mackenzie of Belle River was found guilty in March of killing and causing unnecessary pain and suffering to an animal. Charges were laid by Humane Society cruelty investigators following the April 2012 death of Hobbie, a German Shepherd who Mackenzie had been housing while his owner was in jail. Hobbie was found dead at Mackenzie’s home; a subsequent necropsy by Humane Society veterinary staff found evidence of strangulation, as well as indications that the dog’s mouth had been taped closed. The cause of death was asphyxiation.

Mackenzie was sentenced today to 4 months in jail, 2 years probation, and a 10 year prohibition on owning an animal.

Violence against animals is not acceptable, and sadly, many offenders get off without any jail time. Hobbie suffered a painful death, and the Humane Society is pleased that the justice system has acknowledged that this act of animal cruelty is unacceptable to our community.

Spring is the time of year when a purricane of cats and kittens are flying into the Humane Society looking for new homes. To help make room for all these new arrivals, we’re hoping to find homes for dozens of cats this weekend with an exciting new adoption promotion. This weekend only, at our adoption centre and at Petsmart, adoption fees for all cats and kittens 6 months and older will be reduced to only $25! Normally feline adoption fees are $125 plus a $30 administration fee, which makes this weekend’s promo a great deal and the purr-fect time to find a new best friend fur-ever!

Even at these deeply discounted rates all cat adoptions come with the usual great adoption package- spay/neuter surgery, microchip, FVRCP vaccines, deworming, flea treatment, tests for FeLV/FIV, 6 weeks of health insurance, and post-adoption behaviour support. Rabies vaccine is available for $15 extra.

Our Adoption Centre at 1375 Provincial Road, Windsor will be open 11am to 6pm Saturday and Sunday. Our tent event at Petsmart Legacy Drive will run from 11am to 4pm both days. Adoptable cats may be also viewed online 24 hours a day.
